Unit 18- Building Carnegie Hall Worksheet 1) His plan attracted others interests because it was an expensive project and in the Gilded Age the country seemed to be wealthy when they were actually corrupt. It really caught their eye with Carnegie donating $1 million towards this project. 2) Carnegie was always giving, he was giving $1million to build a music hall for others to go to and enjoy music. He was very generous by donating to many different cultural institutions. 3) I think Carnegie should be considered a benevolent industrialist because with his great donations towards building things for the towns shows that he is taking charge of managing an “industry.” Unti 19- San Francisco’s Chinatown 1)They were originally encouraged to come to the U.S. to work. They also were encouraged by other immigrants from other countries to move to the U.S. 2)They felt that it was an inconvenience having them in the United States. The Party no longer needs them as laborers, they had their own people. 3)The buildings look as if you were in China walking down one of their streets. The young boys and man are dressed as they would be in China. Them being dressed as if they are in their home country and having their buildings look like those in China may make a white American mad because if they were coming to the United States to get out of theirs why would they want it to look and fee just like it. In this time period farmers were the producer of food to all of those surrounding him. They wouldn’t be able to do their jobs without the farmers. 2) It looks as if those on either side of him and above hime are respected because the words telling us who they are and what they do are fancy. Unlike the ones on either side and above him, the ones below are very dull and not as eye catching as the others. 3) In the country at this time prices of crops were decreasing as the price of transporting them increased. In hopes of bringing themselves more money, they would try to promote themselves they would form things like the Grange. Triangle Fire Evaluation "The women of the Triangle shirtwaist fire were martyrs." I feel that they were martyrs, they risked their lives for the benefit of others. They risked their lives not on purpose but them being trapped in that fire changed the work life for others. It made the working life better for some of their family members. The hours of their work changed, the amount of money they earned changed. Many rules were made because of this event. This event showed the public what was actually going on within these businesses and allowed them to make the changes that were necessary. This letter supports his claim of being a “man of action” because first of all he is writing letter back to another leader in support of them as if he was the president at the time. As well as telling them that he doesn’t agree with the way Wilson is dealign with what has happened. 2) Roosevelt felt that Wilson was wrong with not entering the war and that the best response to the sinking of the ship was to enter the war. 3) He is disgusted with the way our government is handling things and the way our people are agreeing with what the government is doing. 4) He is referring to Lincoln’s reaction because Lincoln’s reaction to the firing of Fort Sumter was not a good decision by our government. Lincoln’s response led to the civil war and he felt Wilson not responding could make for future attacks. Journal- Roosevelt responded to the progressive demands by turning the White House into a “bully pulpit,” championing the nations emergence as a work power. Along with that he advocated conservation and antitrust reforms. He moved the nations center of power from Wall Street to Washington. Chapter 22: Journal 1- I believe that in this chapter we will learn about the events leading up to WWI such as the foreign policies as well as our relationship with foreign countries. In learning about the events before the war we will also learn how our government felt about the war and their position in the war, why we joined, what that did to our government. Journal 2- America tried to stay out of the war because were trying to stay out of foreign problems. They finally joined the war after reading a telegram stating that Germany was trying to form an alliance with Mexico along with other events before hand. Recruiting posters for African American soldiers, 1918 1) Both of these posters show patriotism in the way that they both have flags, showing that they are doing this for their country. They are fighting for their country and their freedom, because they are considered citizens of America, so they too should be fighting for their freedom. 2) They would enlist based off of these posters because its showing blacks that they are powerful and can fight those who are fighting against us and win. 3) Lincolns picture was incorporated into the poster because he was the one who made them free and become citizens of the US. 4) The posters were there to recruit African Americans for the war but they also attracted Mexicans. Mexicans weren’t attracted to the war though, they were attracted to the work they could do because the African Americans were leaving. Jobs were opened up the the Mexicans because of the African Americans joining the war. Cartoon Analysis: There is a man sitting on a bench with a sign stating that he is a victim of the bank failure and a squirrel talking to him, asking why he didn’t save money for the future. The man is saying that he did, as he sulks, smoking a pipe. The sign on the man stating “Victim of Bank Failure” is a symbol of the stock market crash and how everyone started loosing money because people were taking out loans to buy stocks and not paying back the money they borrowed or using stock to buy stock. Caption: A victim of the stock market crash. Journal 2- Why do the people do what they do? The children who left their homes at such a young age did it for many reasons. Some would leave for adventure, others for work. Work wasn’t always the best because they wouldn’t always get payment to help out their families, they would just get food for them to eat to get by and keep working. Their families were loosing their jobs at home so they would go somewhere else, away from home, to get jobs themselves and support their families as if they were the men of the house. What surprised you? What surprised and hit me the most was when those who left home at a young at talked about their journey and experiences at a later age. How they got so emotional and it brought them back to that time as if it was just yesterday. What also surprised me was that the young children were kicked off of trains that people were getting on to ride. They would be taken into jail because they were thought to be run aways. The families of these children would go from middle class citizens to poor, they would have nothing. It also amazed me that some would ride these trains again in a heartbeat and others couldn’t be paid enough to do it again. Amelia Earhart Document 1) They were considered exceptional because both were females and there hadn’t been really any female pilots. Amelia had many firsts, she was the first women passenger on a transatlantic flight, the first women to fly solo across the Atlantic and first female recipient of the flying cross. 2) Amelia and Neta were both women who didn’t follow what “normal” women did back in the 1920’s. They did something that was unusual fro women, the became pilots. Amelia became the most famous female pilot of that time period and had many first for women in her career. 3) Rosa Parks: Rosa Parks was a women of color in the 1950’s who initiated the civil rights movement. She was unwilling to give up her seat on the bus to a white man. Her not wanting to give up her seat to a white man started the movement in ending segregation. She was proven guilty for not following the bus rules but she started the fight to end segregation which was later ended. Rosa Parks was different from Amelia and Neta in the way that Rosa did something that would change the life of everyone of her race, while Amelia and Neta changed something for women of their color and opened up more job opportunities for them. Journal 4- The 1920’s became the “New Era,” once Woodrow Wilson left the white house. There was more of a freewheeling economy than before, along with an increase of individualism. The republicans ruled the White House from 1921 to 1933, Harding, Coolidge, and Hoover. Coming out of World War 1 the United States came out with their economy intact and enjoyed a decade of growth. New York became the center of world finance, replacing London. The automobile industry became the largest single manufacturing industry in the nation. Automobiles change America. Mass production, using assembly lines became standard in almost every factory. Mass production fueled corporate profits and national economic prosperity. They had more material things that they are producing with the factories. In the 1920’s they had achieved mass capacity, the had produced more than what was being purchased. Then came the prohibition, the law that made it illegal to make, sell or transport alcohol in the united sates. The 18th amendment, the prohibition law, became the only amendment that was repealed. Also in the 1920’s the role of women changed, women worked and went to college. Then the Harlem Renaissance, African American achievements in art and literature developed across America.Jazz changed the era and women became flappers, they danced freely to jazz. Many large areas of the nation did not share the wealth of the 1920’s which left farmers and other land owners to no land or lack of plumbing, electricity, and gas. The Crash, the stock market crashed and the economy with it, causing the Great Depression. Hoover does not act on the depression. The depression hurt everyone but the poor the most, putting farmers and workers into an aching hardship. I feel I have learned everything I expected we were going to in this unit as I predicted in journal 1. Chapter 24: Journal 1- 1) Roosevelt won the election of 1932 by a landslide because there was such a demand for change. The popular mandate for change was loud and clear. The people wanted a different style leading for our country. They had just had a republican and were in want of a democrat. 2)They steered the nation toward recovery by first balancing the imbalanced of the nations economy. They didn’t want to eliminate private property or imposed socialists programs, the simply wanted to save the capitalists economy by remedying its flaws. Secondly, they were in s crisis of underconsumption. Farmers and factories were producing more than they were selling and more than what was needed by consumers. To solve this somehow the balance between consumption and production needed to be restored. Thirdly, they looked to protect smaller businesses with government programs. The big businesses had developed and were there to stay but the government want to help support these smaller businesses as well. Fourthly, they sought to lend a helping hand to the poor people who suffered from maldistribution of wealth. 3)Republican and business people felt that the New Dealers and their program were too radical. Democrats criticized the New Deal because they felt it failed to lessen the human suffering caused by the Great Depression. There were many critiques from both sides of the political spectrum. 4)The New Deal made many welfare programs in order to provide those Americans with a level of security. One program that as made was the Work Progress Administration (WPA). This program gave those unemployed jobs funded by the government on public works projects. The New Deal was beginning to construct the welfare system that we have today. Before the Great Depression there were no programs in place to help those who lost their jobs. 5) The Soviet Union instructed Communists throughout the world to join hands with non-Communist to help advance the fortunes of the working class. The meant those opposing the New Deal switched to supporting their relief programs and encourage labor unions. With this switch it made the conservative side to heighten their opposition of welfare, causing drama. The drama split the nation into two sides and this cause the New Deal to decelerate and go away. George Washington would have supported the New Deal, 1934 1) Roosevelt used many references to Washington because he had similar views to those of our first president. His references were credible so his speech was was that much more credible. He was using references to our first president who had served two terms. 2)Roosevelt encouraged a more consolidated nation in his speech by talking about the expansion of the nation after during the time Washington served as president and after. He talked about how after the death of Washington the nation expanded far more geographically. He also talked about how Washington knew that nations grew as their commerce, manufacturing, and agriculture grow and the all of these grow as transportation grows. 3) Roosevelt was in favor of expanding railroads and highways in his speech because like Washington, he knew that the nation would only grow more as transportation grew. So expanding the railroads and highways would expand the nation agriculturally, in manufacturing and the commerce of the nation. All things he refers to when he talks about Washington and the views they share. Chapter 25: Journal 1-
A soldier on the battle for the Philippines, 1945 1) I feel that the tone is an optimistic tone and the Sidney is optimistic. He feels bad for the way these people were treated before but feels that there will be change in the future and things will be good again for those people. 2) They portray the Japanese to be awful people by using the words “barbarism” and “cruelty.” This description of them is clarified by the statement “the Japanese take the grand prize” after talking about how they treat those people. 3) Sidney felt sad for the old man and young boy and how they get they had to treat him. The old man felt that he had to take off his hat a bow down to Sidney because he had to do so to the Japanese. The young boy when offered candy from Sidney said “yes sir” to him. These things show how trained and afraid of the Japanese they were. |
